How to Check Multiplayer Support Before You Buy

Local co-op, online co-op and Remote Play Together are different. Use this checklist before planning game night.

“Multiplayer” is a category, not a complete setup instruction. A game may support people on one screen, separate computers online, or a streamed local session. Those arrangements can require different hardware, accounts and copies.

Steam’s official Remote Play documentation describes Remote Play Together as a way for invited friends to join as if they were at the same computer. Only the host needs to own and install the game; the other players connect through streaming. Steam also notes that this feature is associated with local multiplayer, local co-op or shared/split-screen capabilities. Source: Steamworks Remote Play documentation.

Four labels that should not be merged

  • Local multiplayer: more than one player uses the host device.
  • Local co-op: players cooperate on the host device.
  • Online multiplayer or co-op: players connect over a network, commonly from separate devices.
  • Remote Play Together: a supported local session is streamed from the host through Steam’s feature.

The exact implementation belongs to each game. A broad “co-op” label does not answer whether two keyboards work, whether controllers are required, whether progress belongs to the host or whether cross-platform play is available.

A pre-purchase checklist

Confirm the store page and current official support information for the exact platform you will use:

  1. Minimum and maximum player count.
  2. Local, online or both.
  3. Shared screen, split screen or separate displays.
  4. Number of copies and accounts required.
  5. Controller and input requirements.
  6. Cross-play or platform restrictions.

Accurate platform metadata helps discovery—itch.io, for example, asks creators to classify multiplayer support separately from free-form tags. Source: itch.io discovery documentation. But metadata is only the start; verify the details that affect your group.

This checklist is based on platform documentation, not a compatibility test of a particular game or network.
